Is Social Media Ruining Photography?
For many in the photography business, the majority census will answer in the affirmative. This is because social media has allowed easy access to pictures and images that are beautiful and gorgeous but at the detriment of many in the photography business.
People used to rely on professional photographers to help them gain the best photos and images for their collections. But since the inception of social media especially Instagram, the entire industry has had to experience a paradigm shift. Many casual photographers post their pictures online for sharing and viewing.
Many viewers are opting to purchase these photos as an alternative to hiring a photographer for themselves. Many event photographers are exempt from this quandary. But wildlife and environment photographers have become vulnerable to this trend.
Many photographers of such a profession are trying their best to enter social media platforms and sell their photos but it is difficult to compete with other random photographers. The reason is that they try to charge even less than the ones offered by professionals. This put the professionals at a disadvantage.
Many try their luck by establishing a brand that helps bring traffic to their platforms. But this is challenging for the majority of photographers. All in all, it is a fact that social media has put a strain on the photographic industry. Their ability to perform their duties is beginning to hinder.
This can be remedied if the photographers come together to form a union where they can promote and support each other on digital platforms. Many photographers have in fact helped one another make a change in their business and find some semblance of success.
All these photographers can do is integrate with these social media platforms and try their best to retain sustainable revenue to continue with their endeavours.
