Artist Statement

Bryan has had a lifetime interest in photography and has a Diploma in Professional Photography. He started off with a 35mm Pentax Spotmatic and a 120mm Rolliflex twin lens medium format camera. With the advent of digital cameras progressed to the Fuji Finepix S2 Pro and a range of Nikkor lenses, then a Nikon D90 before upgrading to a 36.3MP Nikon D800, a Nikon D810 and the mirrorless Nikon Z9 with its superb autofocus features. The tonal range and extra detail the 45.7 Mega pixel Z9 picks up is superb and will be seen in the prints he has for sale.

His wide angle 14-24mm or 24-120mm are used mainly for landscapes and his other Nikon lenses include a 85mm portrait lens, 50mm and 105mm macro and extension tubes for closeups, and a 70-200mm with a 2x extender and the 100-400mm..

While his photography started by focussing on plants and fungi in New Zealand, he rapidly moved to photographing landscapes, for which he has been influenced early on by the work of Ansel Adams and Andris Apse.  His first interest in landscape photography was after he purchased Ansel Adams book, ‘Yosemite and the Range of Light’. A short time later Andris Apse books ‘Light and Landscape’ and ‘New Zealand Landscapes’ he purchased and had signed by Andris’ at his Okarito Gallery.

The information he has gathered from both of these books and their other publications has added two things to his bucket list which have since been ticked off.

Visit Yosemite National Park, Death Valley, Zion National Park, Antelope Canyon in Page, Monument Valley, Arches National Park, Canyonlands and  Arcadia National Park in the U.S.A.

Travel around New Zealand’s scenic landscapes and waterfalls on a regular basis.

2024 July to September. Travel to USA to photograph landscapes, wild animals, buildings.  Places to visit Mount Shasta, Yosemite, Sequioa National Park, Los Angeles,  New York City, Vermont,  Yellowstone National Park, Great Teton National Park,  Salt Lake City,  Moab, Gobelin Valley,  Lower Antelope Canyon,  Horseshoe Bend, Sedona,  Joshua Tree National Park

Bryan received his Diploma in Professional Photography in 2010 and has ticked off the two items on his bucket list and is continually looking for travel opportunities to places with inspiring landscapes. In 2010 he started Bryan Pollock Photography part time with a goal to going full time. Since 2015 he has enjoyed a high level of success, proving to himself that following your heart in a creative activity can be very fulfilling and one of the best choices he has made.

His equipment includes Nikon Z9 that he uses to capture RAW images with a variety of Nikon z lenses.  Lenses include 85mm, 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm,  100-400mm, , 105mm macro and extension rings. This camera is used for most of  his landscapes, bird photography and macro photography.

To optimize the digital image Bryan uses predominately ‘Capture One Pro’,  ‘On One’,  To this end in Capture One Pro Bryan does everything that he deems necessary.  To get maximum optimization he finely adjust the exposure, global contrast, brightness, shade, focus, color balance before checking the vertical and horizontal lines, cropping, and unwanted spots or marks on the image.  The images are then catalogued in Capture One Pro and given a title and key words to allow the image to be easily located in a search. He then print the images himself on Epson Sure Color printers to produce the fine art prints that he is exceptionally happy with.

In his studio Bryan has an Epson SC P800 printer that he uses to print cards, prints up to A2 size – 17”x22” (420 x 594 mm) or panoramas 17’’x 96” (420mm x 2440mm). For larger prints he uses an Epson SC P7070 printer. Both printers use the new Ultra chrome HDX pigment inks.  Archival quality acid free papers with the choice of 210-310gms matt or gloss surfaced papers for all of his prints. Canvas prints 17” x 22” and vertical and horizontal panoramas up to 96” or 2.4m tall or wide x 17”. These are then sprayed with two coats Art Premiere Print Shield to protect from dust and UV.

Images are sent out rolled up with protective paper in cardboard tubes throughout the world.
